Sainsbury Centre, University of East Anglia
Restaurant and Cafe project at The Sainsbury Centre located at The University of East Anglia.
Firstly a little history. The Sainsbury Centre is a public art centre showcasing both radical and priceless pieces from around the world.
The centre opened 12th April 1978. The building itself was radical in its design and used building techniques that were unique at the time. For those that don’t know, the Sainsbury Centre project helped launch the career of Sir Norman Foster the world renowned architect.
This particular project was a total building refurbishment intended to bring the Sainsbury Centre up to date. Catershop were approached to undertake the Restaurant & Cafe project by the Russell Partnership.
Working to pre-agreed design our role was to supply the equipment and project manage the installation. However the challenge of the project was interpreting the plan layout and making it work within the strict aesthetic boundaries laid out by the architect, Foster & Associates.
The project was successfully finished in the summer 2006. The end result, although incredibly clinical by design, does in essence look absolutely stunning and is in keeping with the overall appearance of the building.
